New Music: Teaser for Numero Deux – The Superlative

One of Ottawa’s hardest working bands, The Superlative, has been in the studio since last year and finally have something to share with us.  It may just be a teaser, combined some rad art work, but it does paint the picture for their upcoming sophomore release, appropriately titled, “Numero Deux.”

The teaser sounds like the band has moved to a little edgier sound while the final piece shows that they haven’t lost their ska/reggae groove. The full album drops in May, but we are told there should be a video out before then to keep you satisfied.

The Yips release their new album Air Loom to the world and throw a massive party at Gabba Hey

The Yips, Air Loom, Ottawa, 613, garage, canadian music

My body aches. My shoulder feels like it was bent all the way back in the wrong direction. There are bruises on my arm and legs. These are the signs of one hell of a night shared between music fans, friends, and those looking to conjure out their inner demons through some good ol’ fashioned ouija rock. Ottawa’s The Yips amassed all these souls together at Gabba Hey! Saturday night for the release of their new LP Air Loom, put out on physical cassette tape and digital formats through Bruised Tongue.

I’ll avoid going too far into album review mode,  but you should go listen to Air Loom right here and decide how you feel about it.  Continue reading

Interview: Liam O’Neill of SUUNS

SUUNS, Montreal, indie, Images du futur, zeroes, black sheep inn, ottawa

This past weekend Montreal electro-infused, psych-rock band Suuns (Secretly Canadian) played at Black Sheep Inn for the first time and treated us to their in-your-face sound. Their pulsating, unfettered sound was unforgettably penetrating to us in the quaint venue, and nothing was going to stop the music from making an impact on those who made it out that night. Joe wrote a great post on the night, which can be found here. Continue reading

The crowd going nuts for Andrew W.K. in Ottawa.

It’s not every night you can get kicked in the face, get a bloody lip, and love every minute of it. That is what happens when you go see the king of party, the sultan of fun, el capitàn de fiesta, the master of positive energy – Andrew W.K.

Yes, it is he who broke out on the scene singing about partying hard who rolled into town on Thursday and packed Maverick’s. The stage was set with a recording that said “tonight is the night we party hard, focus on positive, be friends, get wasted, tonight we party.” Armed with a synthesizer and a buddy singing back up vocals, Andrew W.K. whipped through a rocking, alcohol-fueled set full of party anthems such as “Party Burrito,” “Crumcake,” and “Fun and Wasted.” There was a point where Andrew stopped the set and played a keys solo while his partner went to go get him a shot from the bar. I guess he needed a little more gas.
